What Happens When You Fall Behind on Your Taxes?

October 01, 2026•4 min read

You haven't filed your taxes, and now you're worried about what happens next. The worst thing you can do is keep putting it off.

Maybe you missed one tax return.

Maybe you're several years behind.

Maybe you didn't have the money to pay, so you didn't file.

Or maybe life simply got overwhelming and your taxes fell to the bottom of the list.

Whatever happened, you're not the first person to find yourself in this situation.

And being behind doesn't mean you can't get back on track.

Filing and Paying Are Two Different Problems

One of the first things to understand is that filing your tax return and paying what you owe are separate issues.

You may be behind on your returns.

You may owe taxes.

You may have both problems.

And the best way to move forward depends on what's actually going on.

That's why trying to solve everything at once can feel so overwhelming.

Start by figuring out what you're dealing with.

Don't Assume You Should Wait Until You Can Pay

A common thought is:

“I can't afford to pay the taxes, so I'll wait to file.”

That can make the situation more complicated.

If you have unfiled returns, the first step may be determining exactly which returns are missing and what information is needed to file them.

You don't necessarily need to have every answer or all the money you may owe before you start addressing the problem.

The important thing is to stop letting the uncertainty keep you stuck.

What Should You Do First?

Start by gathering what you know.

Look for:

  • IRS notices you've received

  • Which tax years may be missing

  • W-2s, 1099s, and other income information

  • Business income and expense records, if you're self-employed

  • Previous tax returns

  • Any payments you've already made

You don't have to organize everything perfectly before asking for help.

You just need to start putting the pieces together.

What If You Can't Afford the Tax Bill?

That's a separate question from whether your returns need to be filed.

Depending on your circumstances, there may be options for addressing a tax balance you can't pay in full.

But you won't know what may be appropriate until you understand the full picture.

That's why I don't recommend making a decision based on one piece of information like the amount you think you owe.

Your filing history, financial situation, and tax debt all matter.

Don't Ignore IRS Notices

If you're already receiving letters from the IRS, pay attention to them.

Open them.

Read the deadlines.

Keep them together.

And if you don't understand what the IRS is asking you to do, get help understanding it.

Ignoring a notice doesn't make the underlying problem disappear.

It can also mean missing an opportunity to respond before the situation becomes more serious.

You Don't Have to Fix Everything at Once

If you're several years behind, the thought of getting caught up can feel enormous.

But you don't have to solve the entire problem in one day.

The first step is understanding:

What's missing?

What does the IRS have on record?

What do you owe, if anything?

What needs to be filed?

What happens next?

Once you have those answers, you can start working through the problem one step at a time.

This Is a Good Time to Get Help

If you're dealing with multiple unfiled returns, IRS notices, or a tax balance you can't afford, this may be more than a simple tax-preparation project.

You may need someone to look at the whole situation and help you understand what comes next.

That's where professional tax resolution help can make a difference.

You don't have to figure out an IRS problem alone.

If you're behind on your taxes and aren't sure where to start, I'd be happy to help you understand your situation and discuss what options may be available.
